Marbled Silk Scarves Workshop

On Wednesday afternoon former NY gown designer and fabric artist Bill Colvard led a fabulous workshop at Associated Artists!

Each participant was given a blank white silk scarf and instruction on how to create gorgeous marbled effects using acrylic paints. No two were alike at the end of the day - not even close! All are simply gorgeous, though, and the feedback afterwards was a resounding "More! More! More!"

We sell Bill's scarves here in our gift shop. After taking the workshop I can fully attest that his prices are a steal!

Here are a few photos...

And yes!We will indeed offer this one again. Keep an eye on our website or sign up for our Weekly Notes so that you'll be in the know when a date is set.

Dimensions 2010

We are anxiously waiting for our final results from our juror for this year's Dimensions. Associated Artists has been hosting Dimensions, a national juried exhibit of visual artwork in all mediums, for 44 years. Isn't that amazing!? 44 years...

Every year in mid-winter we put out a call to artists for this show. Entries arrive January through mid-February from all over the US and often the world. We bring in a juror - someone well known in the national arts community - associated with a museum, gallery, or occasionally an educational institution. Our juror receives a blind cd of images and from those chooses the ones which will actually be given acceptance and hung in the show.

This year our juror is this guy: Robert Lange. Give him a Google - you'll see why we're so excited!

1+

On Thursday evening, Feb 25th, Associated Artists hosted an opening reception for our new show: 1+.

This is a special exhibit - in which each artist had to create a piece collaboratively, working with at least one other person. Some worked with a child... a grandchild... and some worked with another artist.

One special piece was created by Shawn Beard, AP Art teacher at the Career Center with Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools. Beard worked with 6 of his students to do a painting of Haiti - figures, and images of the mountains. Proceeds from the piece (if sold!) will be donated to the Haiti relief efforts through the local chapter of The American Red Cross.

Another teacher, Mary Bailey Thomas - photography instructor from Forsyth Country Day School, did 6 separate pieces, each with a different student. The hand-colored and altered photographs are individually unique yet together form a beautiful series of work.

One more great idea came from our volunteer show chair, Chad Beroth, who hung a trio of blank canvases in the gallery. Below these canvases letters form the word "COLLABORATE" - and a variety of art supplies are on hand for visitors to share in the process of creating a canvas by the community.

We hope you can make it by to see this wonderful exhibit!
