Tips from Tamara Propst

Hello! This is Taylor here again, Associated Artists’ intern from Salem College.

On Tuesday evening, Tamara Propst did a wonderful AAWS Gallery talk about Marketing & Customer Service in the Post-Recession Recession. Along with her husband Ron, she is the owner of The Other Half, an Arts District gallery specializing in both fine craft and fine art. She is also the former longtime manager of the gift shop at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art.

Tamara had some wonderful tips about best practices when selling art. According to her, one of the most important factors is customer service. When someone comes into your studio, booth or gallery, you want to make them feel welcome. Even a simple, “Hi, how are you?” works. Another nice greeting is, “Let me know if you have any questions.” Tamara’s favorite opening line is, “There’s some candy on the counter if you need a spark of energy.” You can also ask where the visitor is from. This makes them feel more welcome and gives you some more information about your client base.

Another important factor is display. A strong display can make pieces that are not as dynamic look fabulous. You want to be sure you aren’t contrasting weaknesses, but coordinating strengths. Tamara sees windows as doorways to your space. In those windows you want to catch people’s attention. Putting the most bizarre pieces you have in the window display will certainly lure some people in. A frequent change in displays is an alternative way to do that. Just rotating pieces around can keep a space looking fresh.

A final tidbit that can really change the mood of the art space is music. Having music on softens the environment. You don’t want people to have to whisper. You want them to laugh, feel comfortable, and ask questions.

Tamara had some wonderful advice about marketing and customer service. Most importantly, her tips are easy to replicate and universal for almost any retail, booth or studio setting. The next time I walk into The Other Half, I’ll have some fresh eyes and a new perspective about their customer service and marketing techniques.

Juried Members: New Works - Putting Together the Show and the Reception

Hello everyone. This is another post from Taylor, Associated Artists' intern for the month.

Last week, Associated Artists set up its newest show, Juried Members: New Works.

Sitting at the check-in table, I was excited to see all the new pieces coming in. We had 78 entries. It’s a strong show with a variety of works. What makes it especially dynamic is that there is a large assortment of media and subject matter. Of course there are oils, acrylics and watercolors, but there’s also photography, ceramics, pastels and mixed media. Most of the Juried Members took advantage of being able to submit up to three works, which creates a unity for the show as a whole.

Although I’ve hung a couple of student shows at Salem College before, this was my first experience hanging a gallery show. Alongside Juried Member and volunteer Joyce Teta, I spent almost all day last Monday designing and hanging the works. The good news is that our efforts were well worth the end result—the show looks great! We’ve gotten some compliments on it already.

Last Thursday, Associated Artists hosted an opening reception for the show. A nice crowd showed up and mingled for a bit. The colors of the night were purple, green and gray, as it seems almost everyone was wearing at least one of those colors. There were delicious snacks and desserts to round off the evening.

All in all a great show; everyone should bring a friend and come check it out before it closes on February 17!

The First Gallery Hop of the Year

Hello all, my name is Taylor Hayes and I am interning with Associated Artists for the month of January. I’m a junior at Salem College studying Arts Management and Not-for-Profit Management. One of the first receptions I was able to attend here at AAWS was the first Gallery Hop of 2012 this past Friday. With the gallery being right here on Fourth Street, the foot traffic was steady and quite diverse. We had a lot going on in the gallery with a pastel demonstration by Bill Gramley and music by Nia Franklin. I’ve been to many Gallery Hops here in Winston and I was happy to experience my first with Associated Artists!

Bill Gramley did a great demonstration and showed me how to create a pear from start to finish with chalk pastels. He tends to work on dark paper and begins with the darkest colors, slowly bringing in the lights to create more drama in the scene. Once he finished he said, “Now it’s your turn!” I was a little nervous because I’ve never used chalk pastels before but I enjoyed the opportunity to test out a new medium. I enjoyed the texture of the pastels and the ability to smooth it out or leave it rough. I also enjoy the amount of pigment that comes from the chalks, making the piece very saturated. My pear turned out pretty good and I hope to experiment with pastels more in the near future. Bill and I had a very nice conversation about the Sidewalk Art Show in Roanoke, VA. Roanoke happens to be the place where he sold his first work of art as well as my hometown.

Nia Franklin is a 19 year old musician from Winston-Salem currently attending East Carolina University for a degree in music. She plays the piano and sings her own music. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance and thought she adapted well to the Gallery Hop experience. The weather was nice so we kept the door open to welcome passers-by off the street—I think many people were drawn into the gallery solely from hearing Nia’s music from the street. I told Nia that I look forward to buying her CD in the future! I hope she performs at another Associated Artists event very soon.

All in all the first gallery hop was quite a success! I’m looking forward to many more events with Associated Artists.

AAWS & Forsyth Futures team up to present an innovative exhibition!

Associated Artists and Forsyth Futures have received an Innovative Project Grant from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County to present Input/Output: The Art of Visual Data Making. Forsyth County artists will use creative data visualization to illuminate significant issues facing Winston-Salem/Forsyth County residents. The resulting juried exhibition will be on view in the AAWS Gallery in June and July 2012, and will then travel to two other venues.

Creative data visualization is the use of creative means, such as drawing, to explain data in a way that is easy to understand. Increasingly, creative data visualization is used to convey statistics and analysis. Artistic images can make data more accessible to the public, show that it is more than just numbers, and fuel community conversations.

Forsyth County artists are invited to submit artwork interpreting one or more of the top 10 issues residents face, according to Forsyth Futures’ recent Making Progress Report. This report addresses Forsyth County residents’ economic self-sufficiency, engagement in their community, educational success, mental and physical health, and safety. Artists are invited to attend one of two Community Conversations in the AAWS Gallery (Tuesday, February 7, 5:30 – 6:30 pm and Saturday, February 11, 11am - 12 pm), during which Forsyth Futures staff will distribute and discuss the Making Progress Report and AAWS staff will describe the artistic data visualization process and answer questions about the competition and exhibition opportunity. The prospectus will be posted soon on the AAWS website.

This project was made possible, in part, with funding by The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County and the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Thanks to the expert guidance of AAWS board member Maria Brockhaus, we have two beautiful new canvas signs promoting current exhibitions, programs and the Juried Member Artist of the Month! The canvases were designed by Marg Bleggi Doran, printed by Sharpe Images, and stretched/reinforced by Village Frame Shop.

There are two signs: one at our main Fourth Street entrance and one inside the Chatham Building Atrium.

AAWS Chosen for Action Learning Project

An Associated Artists initiative will be the focus of a Leadership Winston-Salem Action Learning Team!
A group of 6 to 7 members of Leadership Winston-Salem’s Class of 2011-2012 will partner with AAWS to suggest ways to grow and diversify our membership as we head into our 56th year of existence. Our Action Learning Team will study this issue, generate ideas and solutions, and make a formal presentation in June 2012.
We are honored that our project is one of 8 chosen from a total field of 26 applicants.

Marvtastic Happenings Downtown

Downtown is abuzz with the “marvtastic” National Black Theatre Festival, and the Associated Artists Gallery at Fourth and Cherry Streets is right in the center of the action!

AAWS is proud to host a special exhibition of photographs from the NBTF. All of the images date from 1989, the first year of this landmark Winston-Salem event. Many of the photos include the festival’s peerless founder, the late Larry Leon Hamlin. Other luminaries pictured include Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Maya Angelou, Lou Gossett Jr., Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. These photos will be on view through Saturday, August 5.

Also, stop by the gallery to see the remaining demos by AAWS member artist Leo Rucker! He’ll be doing caricatures for a small fee on Wednesday, August 3, 12-6 pm. Then on Thursday, August 4, check out his body painting demo with a bodysuit-clad model, 12-7 pm. Thursday will also feature a reception with music by Shakara Byrd, 5-7 pm.

The Walls are Tumbling Down!

In the words of great American singer-songwriter John Mellencamp, the AAWS Gallery walls have come tumbling down!
Our tireless contractor, Keith Maness, spent part of his Memorial Day weekend working on the wall reconfiguration. As you can see from the photos (http://www.associatedartists.org/news-details?article-id=211356918), so far he has cut a large center opening in the wall separating the front and back galleries, and removed the wall dividing the small side gallery from the back gallery. The space already feels much more open, and is both more art-friendly and visitor-friendly!

May 2 was my first day back at Associated Artists after being away for more than 15 years. Great January Workshops Planned!

Sometimes it is hard to think about the coming year, when we haven't even made it to the holidays yet, but this year we are excited to have scheduled several great workshops for January and February! As our gift to you, take a look at some of our New Year plans. And who knows... you may even decide to revise that Christmas wish list after you're seen! :)

We're pretty thrilled to have talented artist and AAWS Juried Member Pat Spainhour coming in January to teach an oil painting workshop. This is a topic we've been asked about many times, and we know she will do a great job! With years of painting and teaching experience, you'll leave this class feeling confident and secure and ready to tackle this challenging medium with ease! Joyce Teta, fabulous calligraphy artist and master book-binding and paper artist, will be offering a fun workshop on handmade leather books. Date tentatively set for January 12 so check your Weekly Notes for specifics, but these will make great personalized Valentine's Day gifts... Just saying...

Continuing our partnership with Winston-Salem Monthly magazine, professional glass artist Jody Danner Walker will offer a free gallery talk about her work. This event will be Friday January 28th at noon.

Next on our list is a wonderful series of practical presentations by professional artist agent, Lee Mecum! Lee has worked with artists her entire life it seems and has a straight-forward and easy plan to help anyone get their work together, portfolio in order, and everything needed to go out and secure gallery representation. If your goals are more simple, she can walk you through the steps for entering juried shows, creating an artist statement, or just tracking your time and making sure you're on track and headed in the right direction. Lee will begin in late January or early February. Her first talk will be "Your Artistic Portfolio: What's In There?" and from there there will be 3 others, as well as the opportunity to sign up for individual consultations. Stay tuned for more on Lee and this timely series.

We're Taking a ROAD TRIP!

Have you been thinking about going to see that Norman Rockwell exhibit and continuing to talk yourself out of it? The drive... the traffic... just general wishy-washiness? Well let us take a load of your shoulders and take you there hassle-free!

AAWS is taking a bus trip the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh on Friday January 21st. The museum reopened last spring after months of renovations and the building of a new structure to house the permanent collection. The previous building reopened in fall, with the Norman Rockwell collection the first of many excellent exhibits to come our way.

Your trip cost will include transportation on a charter bus, as well as admission to the special exhibit. Lunch will be on your own, but there are two cafe's to choose from within the museum facilities. (If weather is warm, you may consider packing a lunch and dining al fresco in the extensive park... but if December is any indication of things to come we're not recommending that at the moment! brrrrrrr!)

The best part of a bus trip is being allowed the time to relax, chat with other art enthusiasts, and enjoy the ride. We'll let the drive watch for traffic while we sit back with our coffee and newspapers on the way down. Pop in your ipod, settle in with that book you've not had time to read, and before you know it we'll be unloading and off you go!

The museum has a wonderful permanent collection of artwork and artifacts from all over the world. This collection is now housed in a brand new modern building which is truly a work of art in and of itself! There are massive outdoor sculptures on the grounds, too.

On Friday at noon join us for the latest Artist in Residence!

This series of monthly gallery talks is an ongoing partnership between Associated Artists of Winston-Salem and Winston-Salem Monthly magazine. Each month writer Diana Greene interviews a local artist: writer, musician, painter, photographer, or this month - filmmaker! That artist then offers a talk at AAWS where you can view work in person, ask questions, and hear "the deeper story" behind their career.

This month's featured artist is filmmaker Julian Semilian, a lover of surrealism, writer, poet, filmmaker, and instructor in editing with the University of North Carolina's School of the Arts Film School.

These events are always FREE and open to the public. We do welcome your donations (suggested amount is $5). Feel free to bring lunch or pick up a great cup of hot chocolate next door at Brew Nerds before coming in! And don't worry if you're late or have to leave early. These lunch-time talks are open and friendly and we understand that you may not be able to stay the whole hour!

Winter Showcase opens this Friday night with a special holiday Open House, reception, performances by the Winston-Salem Youth Choir, and artists present with demos and tables filled with work for sale! The AAWS Gallery has been quite the buzzing bee-hive this week as volunteers painted and prepped, moved pedestals and art supports, and arranged the beautiful work that was brought in by our Member Artists. Drawing Circle - Every Saturday

Bamidele Demerson, Executive Director of the International Civil Rights Museum, led a gallery talk on October 29th, at Associated Artists, titled "Culture, Identity, and Communication in Contemporary Mural Art"

This event coincided with the Cultural Crossroads exhibition, juried by prominent artist and muralist Colin Quashie.

During his gallery talk, Mr. Demerson discussed work by several artists in the exhibition including the work "Faith Healing" by Kathryn Cook (shown above). Other artists whose work he mentioned included Shawn Beard, Diane Nations, and Lisa Travis.

Above: Mr. Demerson discusses the musical themes in a mural by Aaron Douglas. This mural, titled "An Idyll of the Deep South" is located in Harlem in NYC. He went into detail descriptions about several murals by african american artists and artists from all over the world. Each mural's themes, symbolism, interpretations, and meanings were discussed.

Mr. Demerson made the statement that "every time you look at a painting or a mural, you stand at a cultural crossroads between the artist's intention and your own perception."

"Basic Legal Info for Artists" with WFU Community Law & Business Clinic
Wednesday, November 3, 3pm at AAWS

Join us for a robust Q&A session with the WFU Community Law & Business Center about legal issues that arise for artists

This presentation and Q&A session will cover the often-times confusing legal principles that an artist working in any medium needs to know. We will discuss basic copyright law, explaining what rights you really give up when you sell your work, and how best to protect those rights in future deals. In addition, we will cover basic trademark issues and business entity selection and formation. Protecting work online, contracts, copies, and other common questions.

The Wake Forest Community Law and Business Clinic provides legal assistance to small local businesses and non-profit corporations. Headed by Steve Virgil, the Clinic is staffed by third-year law students, all of whom are certified to practice in the state of North Carolina under his supervision.

Even if you have attended a session in the past, info covered will be based on your questions, so bring a specific topic. All areas of art (literature, music, visual art, etc) are open to discussion.

Participants in Joyce Teta's Bookbinding Workshop, "Bonding and Binding," on October 26th at Associated Artists learned all about the lost art of making hand-made books.

Bamidele Demerson, Executive Director of the International Civil Rights Center in Greensboro NC, will present a talk on mural art as a tool for communication. Examples of contemporary murals will be shown, and various historical, anthropological, and sociological perspectives reflecting show themes will be discussed.

The International Civil Rights Center commemorates the 1960 sit-in at the Greensboro five & dime store, Woolworth's. The museum was opened in February 2009, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of that event. The center serves as a repository for information and artifacts, as well as a teaching center and museum. Trena McNabb, Cultural Crossroads Chair

Many of you admired the delightful bouquet of flowers on display at Oct 14th's opening of Cultural Crossroads. These flowers were provided by Trena McNabb's fantastic garden. This was a special bouquet that held two very rare and endangered American flowers, one of which was the Geogia Aster (the delicate spiky purple flower). Along with being one of the artists who currently has work included the Cultural Crossroads exhibition, Trena is creative in another fashion as well - gardening! In fact, Trena's garden was featured in the Winston-Salem Journal earlier this summer. Here is a link where you can read about her natural garden:

Along with providing the flowers for the centerpiece and chairing the show, Trena also brought that delicious Persimmon Pudding. Many of you have asked for the recipe and will be happy to see that Trena is going to share it with you here:

Persimmon Pudding

From Mary Yates (Mother of Trena McNabb).
She said the sequence of mixing is important:

2 cups persimmons (strained and pulp removed)
2 cups sugar
2 eggs (slightly beaten)
1 tall can of canned milk
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 and ½ cups self-rising flour
2 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 teasp. Vanilla
¾ stick of butter melted in a 9” x 13” dish

If persimmon pulp is frozen, before thawing, cut plastic covering and dump in dish you will be mixing it in. Allow to thaw. (Recommended: premeasure the pulp before freezing. In separate bowl, mix the flour, 1 cup of the sugar and spices, baking powder. Sift together. In the bowl with the persimmons, add the 2 eggs and beat till smooth. Add the rest of the sugar and mix thoroughly. Add ½ of the milk, mix well. Sift part of the flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Add the rest of the milk, and vanilla, mix thoroughly. Add the remaining flour mixture, again, mix thoroughly. Turn the pan around to coat with the melted butter. Pour in the melted and still warm butter. Blend until smooth. Pour batter into the buttered pan and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Pudding will be firm but moist. Optional: one cup of coconut added to the batter before baking

Opening Reception of "Cultural Crossroads"

The opening reception for "Cultural Crossroads" took place Thursday, October 14th at Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. A national juried exhibition, this show featured work from all over the country - with a few international works of art as well! The juror for this year's third annual exhibition was Colin Quashie, a renowned muralist and painter from Charleston, SC. Out of over 300 works of art submitted for entry into the show, Colin Quashie selected 74 for inclusion in the exhibition. This year's winners were:

Honorable Mention: "Remembering Mr. Potato Head" by Brian Haverlock

The reception included live music from the Hispanic Arts Initiative.

Wine was provided by Total Wine & More.

Trena McNab (image below, center) was this year's show chair, and she did an amazing job coordinating all of the volunteers, art intake, food donations, hanging the show, etc. She was tireless - as were all of the volunteers! Thank you!

This year's exhibition was presented by Seth Moskowitz along with a matching gift from Reynolds American. Additional support was provided by Park West Salon, Tuggle Duggins, Hispanic League, Salem Senior Services, Clarks Group, Piers Clarkson, & Vicki Schober.

Cultural Crossroads - Lineup of Events

ABOUT Cultural Crossroads
Associated Artists will open our third annual Cultural Crossroads exhibition on Thursday October 14th. Over 300 entries were submitted this year, from as far away as Indonesia. Of these, artist and show juror Colin Quashie has selected 74 for acceptance and exhibition.

As an artist, Quashie is known for provocative pieces which challenge mainstream perceptions of race, culture, and history. We are honored to have him with us for the reception. Additionally, we bring Bamidele Demerson, Executive Director of the International Civil Rights Museum, to our gallery on Thursday October 28th for a special gallery talk: "Culture, Identity, ..... Contemporary Mural Art."

MEET THE JUROR: Colin Quashie

Charleston artist Colin Quashie was recently commissioned by the UNC school of business to paint one of their "Missing History Murals." His mural commemorated the Woolworth's sit in of 1960. "Quashie's art faces off against hard issues of culture, politics and race with a self-conscious awareness that often offends (or disturbs) black, white and other; he discriminates with equality and equanimity. Operating in the tradition of the French avant-garde artists, Quashie challenges the status quo mentality and functioning on frustration with the vision of the masses." -quote from SouthernArtistry.org

"Culture, Identity, and Communication in Contemporary Mural Art"

Is what you see the story the artist intended you to see? Bamidele Demerson, Executive Director of the International Civil Rights Center in Greensboro NC, will present a talk on mural art as a tool for communication. Examples of contemporary murals will be shown, and various historical, anthropological, and sociological perspectives reflecting show themes will be discussed. Cost: FREE

The International Civil Rights Center commemorates the 1960 sit-in at the Greensboro five & dime store, Woolworth's. The museum was opened in February 2009, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of that event. The center serves as a repository for information and artifacts, as well as a teaching center and museum. Associated Artists of Winston-Salem proudly partnered with the Center for Homeownership to host "Art of Homeownership" - a collaborative project intended to highlight homeownership in our community as seen through the eyes of area artists.

For this project, area artists were asked to decorate model homes that would ultimately be auctioned on September 24, 2010. This event took place at the Center for Homeownership in downtown Winston-Salem.

Many artists attended the event (group of artists shown above). Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and people's choice.

The second place award went to the house shown above, a mosaic "star" tile house by AAWS member and artist Dennis Millsaps.

Above is a closeup view of the model house decorated by AAWS artist & member, Chad Beroth, and his two daughters. This was one of several houses that were collaborative efforts.

Above is the "Environmentology" house by AAWS artist and member Jean Yates. Any artist in the community was eligible to participate - the houses were first come, first served!

On the tables where each house were displayed were small boxes to cast votes for "People's Choice"

Executive director for Center for Homeownership, Phyllis Caldwell, takes some time to thank sponsors and participants. This event was presented by Leonard Ryden Burr, along with additional support from Goler Community Development Corporation, & SG Atkins Community Development Corporation.

OUTSIDE OPPORTUNITIES ~

SYNTHESIS at Salem Fine Arts Center, Mary Davis Holt Gallery. Oct 22, 2010 - Jan 28, 2011. This exhibition will feature a variety of works of visual art inspired by poetry, literature, music and dance. The exhibition will coincide with a celebration sponsored by the Salem College School of Music in which we will recognize the 200th birthday celebration of Robert Schuman, an original synthesizer of the arts. On the evening of Fri, Oct 29th, there will be a reception for the artists followed by the School of Music faculty performance of beloved works by Schuman as visual artists and dancers display and perform their creative responses to the music. Installations, two-dimensional and three-dimensional works in all mediums will be considered. Artists 18 and older are invited to send up to five submissions to be considered for exhibition. The Lake Norman Art League announces a call to artists for its Annual Fall Exhibition, October 22, 2010 - January 2, 2011. The exhibit will be held at the Carolina Art Garden, in Cornelius, NC. AAWS artist Mary Bailey Thomas held a workshop at the Associated Artists gallery on Saturday, September 18th, about the process of Photo Transfer.

Participants learned the techniques of transferring images from color laser copies onto paper or fabric using Citrisolv concentrate (shown above).

(above) A large selection of laser copies were provided for participants to experiment with, and artists were also allowed to bring their own images.

(above) After the images were transfered, Mary Bailey Thomas taught artists various techniques to embellish their individual images using their favorite color/drawing media.

This past weekend was a momentous one for Winston-Salem, the "City of the Arts," because our community celebrated the opening of the new Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. Associated Artists had a nice presence at the weekend festivities, with artist demos and a booth staffed with volunteers. A big THANK you to all of our volunteers and artists - including Jack Hernon, Connie Chesner, Ralph Calhoun, Joe Bircher, Kathy Fritz, Lee Reynolds, Scott Davis, Leslie Karpinski, Bill Gramley, and Suzette Sides to name a few! You did an amazing job sharing with the public about Associated Artists!

Presenter Mary Bailey Thomas, AAWS member and artist at Studios 625, has taught this workshop at numerous State & National Art education Conventions, the Sawtooth Center & at AAWS over the past five years.

Materials:
*Mary Bailey Thomas will have copies on hand for those who just want to learn the process and do not bring their own images.

*For those who want to use their own images: Mary Bailey Thomas recommends LePrint Printing on Jonestown Road for the color laser copies. LePrint will print any size up to 11 x 17. If participants want to do the larger size transfer they will need to supply the paper.

(Printing FYI: If there are words, participants need to flip them or invert them so they will not print backwards. They can email a jpg. to LePrint. The laser copy has to be a powder toner copier to work; ink jet prints will not work)

Model Houses Ready for Pickup!

The first batch of model houses for the Art of Homeownership are ready for pickup at AAWS! Here is a photograph of one of the blank models:

Can't you imagine all of the fun ways to decorate these? It is free to participate - all you need to do is stop by Associated Artists at 301 W. 4th Street to pick up a house and get started! You will get a ticket to the auction taking place on September 24th and there are cash prizes to be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place!

The decorated houses will need to be returned to AAWS by September 7th so that they can be put on display around the community before they are auctioned off on September 24th at Taste of Homeownership Signature Event. To learn more about this fun community art project, please click here.

"The Art of Home Ownership"

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The Art of Homeownership is a collaboration between the Center for Homeownership and Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. For this project, artists will decorate small model houses to be auctioned on September 24th. The decorated houses are intended to highlight the unique perspective of local artists and promote a visual and positive awareness of homeownership in our community. The Art of Homeownership will be introduced as a signature experience during the 5th annual Taste of Homeownership fundraising event on September 24, 2010 at Odd Fellows Club House located at 185 Park Ridge Circle, Winston-Salem, NC 27104

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Decorate a model house! Blank houses will be available for pick up at Associated Artists after August 16th. Decorated houses are to be turned back in to Associated Artists by September 7th. Decorated houses will then be displayed around the community until the auction on September 24th. Materials are first come, first served. There is no fee to participate!

CASH PRIZES

The houses will be judged and cash prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners. The houses will be auctioned and sold during the Taste of Homeownership event. As a thank you for participating, each artist will be given a ticket to attend the Taste of Homeownership event.

Brenner Children's Hopsital Seeking Donations
Brenners Children's Hospital is dedicated to pediatric patient care, education and research centered on the special needs of children. The Festival of Trees is the largest fundraiser benefitting Brenners each year, with proceeds supporting programs that enhance the lives of our young patients. The highlight of the festival is a large raffle that raises thousands of dollars each year for the children. Amani Bead Night recap

Amani Bead Night took place Friday, July 16th, from 6-8pm at the AAWS main gallery. A fun night of beading, this event helped raise money for the Amani Foundation to support their work in improving the lives of orphans in Africa. "Black & White" Exhibition Opening Reception,
Thursday, July 15th, 5-7pm at AAWS:

We had a fantastic turnout for the opening reception of "Black & White." It was a wonderful evening full of intriguing art, good conversation, delicious hors d'oeuvres, and ... fun! People of all ages enjoyed the various interpretations of this all-member theme show. Black and white works of art hung on the walls, but the evening was in full color!

A good group of folks turned up to hear about preparing digital images for submissions. Whether learning how to edit images for submissions to juried shows or how to format files for email and websites, this workshop was chock-full of tips, how-tos, and information!

Carl Galie,shown above, an experienced photographer and active AAWS member, led the discussion with a presentation and robust question & answer session.

We hope you can join us for the Opening Reception of our Black & White Exhibition, an all-member theme show where artists were asked to create works of art using only black, white, and shades of gray as their colors. Thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers yesterday, the show is hung and looks fantastic! We hope you can join us in appreciating all of the varied interpretations of black/white. Running the gamut of mediums from photography to charcoal drawings to paintings to sculpture, the artwork for this show has really impressed the AAWS staff and we can't wait to share it with you! Marketing Your Art Presentation Recap

Thanks to all of the wonderful presenters for our "Marketing Your Art" presentation on June 26th. Associated Artists of Winston-Salem was thrilled to be able to offer a three part presentation with Winston-Salem Monthly Editor Emily-Sarah Lineback, artist Pat Spainhour, and the generous folks from http://www.cityofthearts.org/.

Part I We learned lots of tips about how to get the word out about your art in the local media. Emily-Sarah Lineback offered advice about how to write news releases, put together press kits, and find out how to contact local arts writers and editors. She offered a wealth of informative tricks of the trade about how to get your materials noticed by the right people in the media. These were tidbits of info that only an editor is privy to - and she also gave encouraging words of wisdom to all aspiring artists.

Part II Next up was Pat Spainhour, an experienced local artists, art teacher, and AAWS member. Having spent years of trial and error with her own art marketing, Pat was able to give advice to those who are new to the promotion game from one who has experienced the ups and downs of being an artist. One great tool she mentioned was "The Artist's Guide," a book by Jane Battenfield. Several people in the audience agreed that this book is a must-have for all aspiring (or established) artists!

Part III The folks from CityoftheArts.com gave us an in depth overview of the current and upcoming features of the interactive website http://www.cityofthearts.com/. We will probably do another workshop in the future once all of their artist features have gone live, as there will be more bells and whistles to come! Audience members learned how to post events, register, and got a sneak peak at the artist profile and art marketplace feature.

The beads we will be using are hand-made by artisans in Africa, and this event will help raise money for the Amani Children's Foundation.
